Good Influence

One of the most profound influences on my life over recently has been my bass guitar teacher. He has helped produce fifteen records with nine different bands, two of which were from his self-acclaimed band, Honky Mofo. He brought down the sound through television in commercials for Ford and Transformers, took part in the Motion Soundtrack for The Punisher, and has been teaching bass guitar lessons on the side. Over the years he has found many outlets for his musical capabilities, supported himself fully on his musical talent, and more recently acted as a role model for myself. He is none other than the one and only, Ricky Wolking.

During the last six years of instruction from Ricky, I have learned basic music theory as well more unique approaches towards modern music and other techniques involving the mastery of bass playing. A tactic I have recently learned isn’t necessarily included in the traditional style of teachings. On one of Ricky’s latest recordings, he used a baby food jar opposed to a pick in order to compliment an effect pedal, which in turn made a pretty funky sound. I have been trying to expand my capacity as musician in a similar ways, in order to overcome the routine path that many musicians follow.

Even though I only see Ricky for one hour a week during my lessons, he has been a major influence in my life none the less. Being one of his only two students, I feel we have a special bond as well as a teacher to student connection. By pushing me to practice, fitting lessons into both of our schedules, and reinforcing my goals as a musician, he has helped me perfect my musical abilities and will surely have an impact on my future musical career.
